HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
St. John the Evangelist School was one of the first Catholic elementary schools in the Los Angeles Area. In September of 1926, under the supervision of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, the school opened its doors to 123 pupils. There were three members of the faculty, two sisters and one lay teacher in grades 1 through 6.
There were 13 students in the first graduation class of 1927. Four new classrooms were added in 1950 to the east of the present Church. At this time, the enrollment reached almost one thousand students. With the establishment of new parishes in the north and west, the enrollment leveled off to 780 students.
A new two-story building with twelve classrooms was completed in 1964 on Crenshaw Boulevard and 60th Street. Two classrooms were also added to the previously built primary building. Sixteen Classrooms were in operation by September 1964 with a faculty of twelve sisters and four lay teachers.
The first kindergarten at St. John’s was opened in September 1973.
